Fellowship for Leading Large-Scale Change
No one is born ready to lead large-scale change. The Billions Institute fellowship for leading large-scale change is a blend of carefully curated professional and personal development experiences designed to accelerate your ability to fully embrace your “bigness” as you accomplish audacious, transformative large-scale change.
Fellows will pursue three shared goals:
- Measurably advance your own large-scale change effort and in so doing, demonstrate mastery of our approach, the Model for Unleashing.
- Form a “healthy pack” with peers who share your commitment to creating a healthy and just planet
- Identify and overcome any barriers that are holding you back from your potential as a leader of large-scale change
How it works:
Fellows will gather for five three-day intensives over a two year period, fifteen days total. Each of the five intensives will include sessions with content experts, personal transformation coaches, experiential site visits when appropriate, and peer facilitation. Whenever possible, the intensives will take place at residential retreat centers. Locations will vary to spread out the travel burden for the cohort.
Between the intensives, fellows will apply what they’ve learned in their own scaling efforts. Fellows will have access to faculty and one another through a monthly coaching webinar and access to a private message board. Additionally, fellows will be paired up as accountability buddies to support ongoing integration and application of the material.

This is a radically different kind of group, one that invites the fellows in as co-creators. The Billions Institute will curate and facilitate, but not hand-hold. We envision this group as being a lived experience of the principles that inform the Model for Unleashing.
The ground we will cover will be deeply personal. You will have the opportunity to discover and change unconscious habits that hold you back and sometimes that generates resistance. The fellowship will challenge you to update your core operating system and unconscious assumptions about how you want to show up as a person and as a leader.
Faculty and Staff:
Becky Margiotta will be the primary facilitator for the fellowship. The Billions Institute’s Joe McCannon and Jennifer Kennedy will also be deeply involved in supporting the fellowship, and you can expect to see Skid Row School faculty Christine Margiotta as well.
Over the course of the two years we will bring in large-scale change content experts to challenge and expand your mastery of the Model for Unleashing. For example, we’ll spend more time with Dan Heath who is consistently a highlight of the Skid Row School. Some of the modules that only got an hour of coverage at the Skid Row School are drawn from other trainings that range from an entire day to an entire year. A straw-person of what we imagine will be useful topics is above, and our intention is to design the details of the fellowship with the first cohort that starts in September 2017. We are intentionally structuring this to be responsive to what emerges.
In addition to the hard skills and content, we will bring in coaches to support your growth as a leader for large-scale change. They will be joining us for the in-person convenings to accelerate your personal transformation. We’re pleased to introduce you to them here:
Mike Thompson has often been described as a Change Agent and was identified as “The Fix-It Man” by The Advocate, a national LGBT-interest magazine. Mike is currently serving as CEO of the LGBT Community Center of the Desert in Palm Springs. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Mike previously served as the Chief Operating Officer and Acting President of GLAAD, a national LGBT advocacy organization, Executive Director of Equality Utah, a statewide equality organization, and worked with the Gill Foundation and Gill Action to form One Colorado, the state’s LGBT political advocacy group. Mike has also worked extensively as a leadership and organizational development consultant and is actively involved with CenterLink, the network of LGBT community centers across the country . Throughout his career, Mike’s passion has been building mission-focused organizations.
Nicole Taylor has been dedicated to supporting individuals in their personal transformation and growth for more than 10 years. Using a blend of meditation, yoga, mind/body awareness, emotional intelligence, and Ayurvedic techniques, Nicole facilitates transformative workshops on self-care. She is a graduate of the Hendricks Institute’s Leadership and Transformation program, an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, and a teacher trainer for the Himalayan Institute’s Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist program. A resident of Philadelphia, she has facilitated wellness instruction for the Philadelphia Police Department, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Penn Center for Community Health Workers, and Mural Arts Foundation.
Leslie Chertok is the Managing Director at BioPause, a startup company that she cofounded in 2015. Leslie studied Buddhist Psychology at Naropa University earning a MA in 1991. She has been a practicing therapist and coach ever since. Leslie is a graduate of the Hendricks’ Institute Leadership and Transformation Program. She is a 30-year meditator whose primary interest is in the integration of mindfulness into daily life. Over her 25-year career, she has seen the negative impacts of chronic stress on thousands of people, families, businesses, and communities. Leslie believes that the ability to pause throughout the day holds the key to empowering people to choose to live a healthier, more meaningful life. She works with business and non-profit leaders and has facilitated leadership team retreats within the health care industry. Her preferred work location is in the forest, inviting nature to support people connecting with their most authentic selves.
- Actively participate in the intensives, monthly webinars, accountability buddy sessions, and the message board.
- Serve as a “table facilitator” for at least one Skid Row School during the two year period, coaching and mentoring a small group for the duration of the four day training as an opportunity to sharpen your skills.
- Mentor one new fellow in your second year.
- Make one presentation of learning for group critique and feedback, possibly at a TEDx the Billions Institute will curate.
- Demonstrate mastery of the Model for Unleashing to a graduation committee consisting of three of your peers.
After graduation, fellows are considered members of the “healthy pack” for life. Our vision is that the healthy pack we create together will become a home base, a safe refuge in the uncertain and chaotic experience of leading large-scale change, and the kick in the butt, too, if that’s what’s needed.
Cost: $10,000 per year, with the first year invoiced upon acceptance into the program and the second year invoiced at your one year anniversary. This does not include travel, lodging, or meals.
Partial scholarships are available on an as-needed basis. If this opportunity resonates with you, please apply and request financial assistance.
The initial cohort has been formed and will meet starting in September 2017. We are now accepting applications for the 2nd cohort which will join the 1st in progress in mid-2018.
Fellows will be selected to include leaders working on a diversity of issues and to optimize the representational equity of the cohort. We encourage leaders working on racial and social justice, climate change, education, anti-violence, and lack of access to essential needs and services to apply.
- Graduate of the Skid Row School or Billions Institute Client Engagement
- Actively engaged in leading large-scale change
- Willing to actively engage in deeply personal transformation work with a peer group
We accept applications on a rolling basis and will notify you within 2 weeks of receiving your application of your status.
